Environmental Clean-Up Day in Kibera’s Laini Saba: A Collective Effort for Healthier Communities

The #AngamizaCorona environmental clean-up exercise exemplifies the power of collaborative efforts in creating healthier, safer communities.

In the heart of Kibera’s Laini Saba, the centralization of waste disposal points poses a significant challenge for community members. Residents, faced with the inconvenience of distant waste management areas, often resort to disposing of waste in unsuitable locations, leading to poor environmental hygiene. Compounded by limited income hindering the use of protective masks against COVID-19, even those who wear masks often discard them incorrectly.

The repercussions of improper waste disposal extend beyond environmental concerns, clogging drainage systems and creating hazardous conditions, especially for children using areas near waste as playgrounds. Additionally, inadequate water supply further hampers hand hygiene and exacerbates health concerns.

To address these challenges, a collaborative effort unfolded on Tuesday, August 18, 2020. Amref Health Africa, in partnership with the Youth Empowerment and Development Network Kenya (YED-N Kenya) through the European Union-funded COVID-19 response program, organized an Environmental Clean-Up Day in Laini Saba.

Key Initiatives and Partnerships: #AngamizaCorona

The event, part of the #AngamizaCorona initiative, brought together various stakeholders, including the office of the Kibra Member of the National Assembly MP Imran Okoth, the National Youth Service (NYS) Laini Saba Branch, the Laini Saba Youth Group, and Amref Health Africa in Kenya. Personal protective equipment provided by Amref supported over 35 youth from the YED Network, ensuring strict adherence to waste management policies.

A pre-launch ceremony saw the involvement of local partner SHOFCO, providing handwashing stations, and the Laini Saba Youth Group offering their grounds for the event. The initiative garnered commitment from local youth groups to responsibly dispose of masks and engage in regular environmental clean-up campaigns.

Empowering the Community: From Cleanup to Sustainable Practices

Training sessions, including COVID-19 awareness and waste management, preceded the clean-up exercise. The youth, equipped with knowledge on handling various types of waste, especially hazardous materials, actively participated in the cleanup.

The local government administration, represented by National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), pledged support in engaging the NMS to decentralize waste collection points, ensuring sustainability beyond the event. Local leaders and community members also committed to taking individual responsibility for proper waste disposal.

The Impact of Clean Environments in Combating COVID-19

Clean environments play a pivotal role in reducing disease-causing bacteria and viruses. Through multi-sector partnerships, involving both the public and private sectors, communities gain the support needed to address complex challenges effectively.

The #AngamizaCorona environmental clean-up exercise exemplifies the power of collaborative efforts in creating healthier, safer communities. As the local community embraces individual responsibility, the initiative becomes a catalyst for sustained change, ensuring a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient future.
